    just to mention mechanics that weren't found out about for the longest time: in smash bros melee: invisible cielings (though its always seen but not looked into until it ruined a set in tournament) and v-canceling (both mechanics being usable, but v-canceling much more niche and im not exactly sure how they even found it out)

    Yup, everytime I get into a discussion on pvp in souls games I always feel like a more thoughtout cooldown timer so you just don't get repeatedly screwed over would make it feel all the less frustrating. Like right now me and my mate replaying ER for a wee bit while waiting for the DLC have been invaded practically every 5 minutes just going from spot to spot in the open world and it's always by people twinking their eyes out.

    I think a good way they could have tweaked the cooldown numbers would have been to front-load the cooldown time increases but keep the Follow-up timers as they are. It would look something like this: LV1 - 15m - 10m LV2 - 20m - 10m LV3 - 25m - 8m LV4 - 30m - 8m LV5 - 30m - 8m LV6 - 30m - 5m.... And so on. The other change I'd consider making is that I'd make it so that instead of dropping you all the way back to the start if the Follow-up timer ran out, I'd make it tick down one level and run the cooldown timer again at the highest level you reached. For example, if I reached LV2 my Follow-up and then dropped to level one, I'd have 10 minutes where if I got invaded it would go back to LV2. However, if the highest level I hit was LV3 and it dropped all the way to LV1, I'd only have 8 minutes to bump it back up to LV2. I don't know if articulated it well enough, but my hope is that it would balance out the faster increase of "safe time" by making it quicker to loose levels then gain them. I think this system would give you bigger gaps between invaders, but not wall them out completely.

    18:40: Maybe that was orignally Mytha's boss room? A giant extravagant room that puts her on a pedestal surrounded by candles. It'd fit how vain she is, the covetous demon could also fit in the room before. Both of them would fit in the proto-gutter's presumed lore. Covetous could act as (and even kinda looks like) an abyssal ocean fish, eating the scraps that fall from above. And was a naturally occuring beast that was "tamed" and brought in to act as Misha's guardian while she sits in her acid pool. Misha doesn't seem to mind the nasty stuff so the Gyrm's smell might not be a problem for her, doubly so if the Gyrm were vulnerable enough to be enslaved by her. Man now i'm imagining the tavern full of disgruntled Gyrm, maybe you could chat with the Bartender and he'd ask you to kill Mytha. Even catch a drink with Gavlan lol.

    I agree wholeheartedly with your statement about the taunters tongue. I loved world pvp in ds1, 2 and 3, as an invader and as the invaded. but getting constantly invaded ist just not the same and invading 3 enemies at once in 75% of my invasions sucks as well. i just wish there was an opt in item for a ds style invasion system present, i know there are enough ds "oldtimers" with my exact attitude playing elden ring for it to be worthwhile. oh well, the magnificent sun giveth and it taketh. Nevertheless hyped for the DLC, time to waste some more hours in my favorite game series :>

    @illusorywall, I don't how likely it is that you will see this, but I want to say: As I drafted a concept for a Souls-Like I hopefully will one day produce called "Oblitus" (I'm not going to go into detail about it unless asked) I funnily enough came up with an idea that would likely prevent twinking. It is as follows: ----- "As a player upgrades their equipment (weapons and armor), it increases in weight which can have consequences for a player. This overall serves to incentivize players to pace their upgrades until they reach an equip-load where they can reasonably handle it. Said equip-load can be increased by upgrading the stat that governs it, or by raising it with the small increases gained through leveling other stats. Keep in mind, Oblitus’s leveling intends for the player to reach the maximum level by endgame, so it is a system that accounts for all stats being eventually maxed. However, a fortunate side-effect this system can have is preventing players from bringing late-game items to early-game PvP (known as twinking). Or at the very least, bringing maxed equipment as either a maxed weapon or armor piece will encumber players at that point. Though assume that all weapons and armors will be relatively balanced and fair play to use, also acknowledge that using either a maxed weapon or armor piece could leave an “alleged twink” either highly vulnerable to damage or leave them with insignificant damage. " ----- I pulled this out of an ancient 76-page document of mine which is horribly formatted (I need to convert it to something more readable), anyways I just thought you would find this to be an interesting solution to twinks. On a side note, as much as I want to work on Oblitus, I'm going to have to let it collect dust for a long time before I can do anything with it as I have a lot of steps I need to take before I could ever produce it as a game. Think of it as a "magnum opus" project, something you would need a team for, I will persevere though.

    I think this is yet another problem with Dark Souls stuff being insanely unapproachable without a wiki. The games are best played when going in completely blind, but things like that god damn LEVEL UP SCREEN, unreasonably hidden areas, Covenants, the convoluted weapon leveling, and this hidden DLC entrance drives new players to the wiki ASAP.

    Eh between the massive amount of new spells to use and the massive influx of players that was going to be immediate and expected with Elden Ring as compared to any prior games, even DS3, it just would have been largely useless even without considering certain aspects - illusory walls are largely non-existent, as the areas are massive, not secular paths, and even dev messages would have been lost in the masses, besides nobody cared about downvoting because it's never mattered. Even troll messages can be funny and obvious, and upvotes give actual benefits (and it's still hit or miss) For reference, there's a spot in Elden Ring, after encountering the hand enemies, where you can find a small hand sitting on the edge of a cliff, like most birds will. The message system allows you to type "Could this be a bird?" which I thought was not only situationally funny, but furthermore more was a well known meme, that being the guy looking at a butterfly saying "Could this be a bird" and it became ridiculously popular, by far my most seen message ever, and while I'm not surprised, I mentioned the sheer numbers of people on ER launch, it got a few hundred upvotes while I was still playing, a few actually helping to heal me in combat. I put the game down for like three months, check my first character again, *30,000* plus upvotes. I could have been someone benefiting from SO MUCH healing while playing, it would have been insane. But I had already stopped playing. I know it will never happen again. The opportunity while many people were still messing about in Limgrave, lower Liurnia or accidentally getting sent to Caelid, few were up around Ranni's towers, the uniquely positioned enemy (there may be a couple more small hands acting like birds, but that first was special) and the relevant wording for a meme reference? Almost completely went to waste. So yeah, while even upvotes are cool, the chances are you won't be relying on them, it's just a neat reward that might help you. Taking the time to downvote people? Much less see how much others are down voted? Even in DS1 I very rarely downvoted anything, so most people probably feel like not a lot has been lost there

    Funnily enough, I discovered the hidden message while playing on my old xbox 360 during the pandemic! 2021, and I was replaying an old save file with a high level character, just exploring the levels because at that point I was in NG+3 and had no motivation to fight any enemies. I then found that path near Pinwheel, and for some reason, thought it would be funny to use seek guidance, seeing that there were a bunch of lights sprawled on the floor of Tomb of Giants. I used it, and lo and behold, it was there. I rewatched the video and had a bit of nostalgia, when I first watched this video I thought everyone knew about this message nearby Pinwheel! Was even confused when you said "And that's all of the hidden messages".

    While I do think this is stupid and convoluted for no reason, there is this odd... charm about hiding the DLC to this extent. It really makes it feel like there are even more secrets hidden in the game. But for real tho: This is terrible design. If you'd want to do something similar to this, you should just add little bit more into item descriptions and dialogue to get you directed to at least the right area.

    One thing ive always wondered was if the DLCs were supposed to be the endgame of the vanilla releases but got chopped because of the publisher. Ds1, 3, and BBs stories and game length really get rounded out by them

    • @illusorywall
      @illusorywall 3 дні тому

      I've wondered about this as well! There's no proof of what extent they were conceptualized when, but I strongly suspect that every game since and including Dark Souls 2 had the concepts for their DLCs planned fairly well in advance, knowing they'd want to make add on content but couldn't reasonably fit into the original release. Dark Souls 2 especially, since that had the shortest wait for its DLCs (the first one launching when the game was only 4 months old). I think Dark Souls 1 was probably a lot fuzzier / uncertain / unplanned by the time of launch. Not that the DLC didn't make use of some prototype content from the base game, as early and unfinished versions of Kalameet, the Sanctuary Guardian, and Chester existed. And of course they had some sense of the backstory of Artorias. But in interviews they said they didn't have the DLC planned from the start, and I believe them since there wasn't nearly as much as cut/ prototype content for the DLC as something like the Northern Limit from Demon's Souls. I suspect there was probably a somewhat nebulous plan of "if the game does well, we'll figure something out". Elden Ring is interesting to me since this is by far the longest they've taken to release a DLC. I assume they've also had this planned all along, but it probably just took a while due to being huge, hopefully. :)

    It's still convoluted and just awful. If someone's just playing through the game, almost no one is going to find it without help or a guide. Paid DLC shouldn't require intstructions outside of the game to even access it. I love Dark Souls and think it's the best Souls game, but that doesn't make this awful way of doing DLC any better.

    i really don't get why they never gave us an update that just lets us change the ost back to the original. Also seeing this side by side just points out so much just how obnoxious all the grunting and heavy breathing sounds are, and just how much additional noise everything makes, and how much this takes away from the atmosphere. This has some major "Dragonball Z faulchoner just can't shut up and let the scene breathe" energy. But i also don't remember it being this obnoxious when i played it, so i guess it's also just the side by side that makes it more obvious. Unless it doesn't happen as much in soul form, cause i usually stay dead in order to not mess up world tendencies.

    Man seeing this side by side makes me even more annoyed that the original version isn't playable on PS5- It would've been so cool if Bluepoint included the original version as a unlockable like the MediEvil remake does. But then again that would mean they would've needed to figure out PS3 emulation, and Sony don't bother with that because they rather get ppl to pay for the priviledge of streaming PS3 games. And they don't even let you stream Demons Souls.

    • @illusorywall
      @illusorywall 4 дні тому

      To make matters even worse, I'm pretty sure they could've gotten the original running on the PS5 just fine. The original code of Demon's Souls was ported into a new engine, essentially, which is why the remake plays identically. It's mixed parts remaster and remake. So figuring out PS3 emulation wasn't like a bar that needed to be passed, BluePoint got the original running on PS5 and then redid the graphics and models, basically.

      @@illusorywall Thats even worse. Basically we could've gotten an upscaled native port with the chance of uncapped framerate, to preserve and make available the original version for everyone. Would've made all the changes far less egregious

      @@tehSunBro My thoughts exactly. All the nitpicking we can do of the remake would be far less of an issue if the original got a proper remaster as well. Seeing the treatment that Metal Gear Solid 3 is getting is making me a little jealous as a Souls fan, lol.

    I wonder if thats still in the remake, since this seems to be a very unknown mechanic- But also some very unforgetable knowledge, guess whos gonna make sure to kick 10 corpses into the bossroom from now on.

    Imagine being the guy who made those boss battles, and then the director is like "Great job! We're gonna make it almost impossible for anyone to see those."

    Ha nope. I always prefer to do the first playthrough solo so I can take my time and think about the world. So I fully support the ER style.
